A iPledge For Accutane
Although Accutane is the most effective medication we have to treat acne, they are also the most controversial. The media is not responsible for the time to report on stories of dubious efficacy and demonize the drug is safe and beneficial effects. However, an effect that is not in the way in which the suspicion is that Accutane can cause birth defects and may therefore not be given to women who may become pregnant.
NewRestrictions:
In an attempt to eliminate birth defects associated with Accutane, thousands of Americans who take the acne drug Accutane – and people who prescribe and dispense – you must register on the national list.
In this program, every patient – men and women – must enroll in the computer registry iPLEDGE that began Dec. 31, 2006 to receive Accutane or generic versions of the drug isotretinoin. Doctors must register, too, if they’re going to continue prescribing the pills. Pharmacies and wholesalers also must register so that the pill manufacturers can continue to send supplies.
Additional Steps for Women:
Women must undergo two tests to make sure she is not pregnant in a laboratory or doctor’s office before the first prescription, and monthly pregnancy testing before each refill. Home pregnancy tests are not counted. The doctor must enter the pregnancy test results to the iPLEDGE system, and women must buy their pills within seven days.
Women must also agree to use two forms of birth control while using Accutane, and must register to iPledge – in addition to the first registration of doctors – to report what they do. There is no way to know whether women are truthful in this step, but FDA is seen as an extra opportunity to warn against the dangers of the pill.
The final step happens at the pharmacy. pharmacist must check the computer database before even filling a prescription to ensure that patients follow all the rules.
Range Problem:
FDA estimates that 100 000 prescriptions are for Accutane and generic drugs filled each month. Only since Accutane began selling in 1982, the FDA has received reports of more than 2,000 pregnancies among users (and maybe more who reported never ever). Most ended in abortion or miscarriage, but the FDA has more than 160 babies born carrying the drugs that caused birth defects.
