Asthma Patients and Acne
The asthma drug Zyflo will not help patients with severe acne, according to mid-stage trials conducted by pharmaceutical companies Critical Therapeutics Inc., also known as Zileuton is not anything better to control the number of inflammatory lesions in the placebo than in the statistics of the company.

During the trial of 12 weeks, patients treated with Zyflo an average reduction of 11.5 inflammatory lesions. In comparison with a 9.1 reduction in lesions in other patients taking a placebo – far less than the statistical significance.
Patients treated with placebo showed a decrease of 16.4 lesions in the placebo group, but patients treated with Zyflo showed a significant reduction in the number of lesions and it was 25.3.
Company claims that the drug showed a trend toward potential benefits for some patients, even if the substance is not the main objective.
Linda Lennox, a company spokesman, said the company will probably do a larger trial testing the drug as a treatment for acne, using information from the “proof of concept, from a recent small study.
Company based in Lexington, Massachusetts, says it will continue to analyze data and work with scientists to better interpret the results.
Zyflo blocks an enzyme called 5 lipoxygenase (5-LO). It was approved by U.S. authorities in 1996 to treat patients with asthma aged 12 and older. At that time, the drug owned by Abbott Laboratories Inc., which sold stuff for years before it was licensed to the critical pharmaceutical company by the end of 2003.
